VISITATION
COUNTY OF ESSEX
BEGUN A.D. MDCLXIIII., FINISHED A.D. MDCLXVIII.
BY
SIR EDWARD BYSSHE, Knt.,
EDITED BY
J. J. HOWARD, LL.D. F.S.A.
LONDON;
MITCHELL AND HUGHES, 140 WARUOUR SUllEET, AV.
1888.

JIntrotiucticin.
A \'isitati()n of Essex was made by Sir Edward Bvsshe, Knt., Clarcnceux,
between the vears 1664 and 1668, and a copy by John Wakburton,
Somerset Herald, was purchased at the Sale of the Collections of the late
Stephen Tuckkr, Somerset Herald. As this appears to be the only
transcript extant of this, the last. Visitation of Essex, it has been thought
desirable to print a few numbered and signed copies for private circulation.
The transcript by Warburton is entirely in his autograph, and inside
the cover of the Volume is his Armorial Bookplate shewing the Warburton
Arms quarterly with those of Dutton, and thus inscribed :
"John Warburton, Esquire,
Somerset Herald at Arms and F.R.S."
The first Visitation of Essex is that of 1552; the second that of 15 yS ;
the third was made between 1570 and 1583; the fourth between 161 2 and
1615; the fifth was made in 1634; all of which were published bv the
Harleian Society in 1878 under the editorship of Mr. W. C. Metcalfe, F.S.A.;
and we now give the sixth Visitation, of which that gentleman remarks in
his Preface, "Of the sixth Visitation, that of 1664, the original MS. is
at the College of Arms, and no copy is known to exist elsewhere."
July, 1888.
